High-quality acoustics with Masonite Beams

2020-08-13

Joists from Masonite Beams are ideal for buildings with strict demands for sound insulation and acoustics. Acoustician Klas Hagberg has helped to develop Masonite Beams to their current high standard.
“With Masonite Beams, you can create an incredibly good sound environment in a simple system,” he says.

Acoustics is the science of sound, and Klas Hagberg has specialised in how sound is transmitted in the frame of a building. He has been collaborating with Masonite Beams for fifteen years to find smart solutions for lightweight building systems in apartment blocks.

“Apartment blocks have traditionally been built in concrete, which thanks to its weight has a natural sound insulation quality. Wood needs to be supplemented by several layers and smart joints in order to dampen sound, and we’ve succeeded in doing this by using joists from Masonite Beams in a carefully designed building system.”

Less wood, more function
As with all wooden structures, the execution is extremely important. The joists need to be installed correctly in order to best reduce sound and vibrations. Masonite Beams’ lightweight beams offer proof that it is possible to optimise space, build climate-smart and at the same time achieve high-quality sound insulation.
“With Masonite Beams, you use less wood but get a lot of function. Masonite Beams has proven that you can build high-quality, acoustic environments in a simple, sustainable way,” he says.

Wood is the future
The number of wooden apartment blocks is on the increase. Klas Hagberg believes that this is because of greater environmental awareness, and all indications are that demand for sustainable materials will increase. A lot of work is being undertaken to develop new ISO standards, and Klas Hagberg believes that we will also be seeing stricter requirements for more parts of a building – from floor to ceiling, to furniture and fittings.
“Suspended ceilings have always been well specified, but more and more people are demanding products without hazardous substances and in recycled material. This places much tougher demands on suppliers. Sustainable construction is the future,” he says.
